Tried and tested- holiday party outfit (anything but a dress)

As we get closer to the holiday season, we find ourselves looking for the prefect glam outfit to go with the holiday spirit. Normally, we associate the festive season with the Little Black Dress and, sure, there is no doubt that the LBD will always be a safe choice. But what if we feel the urge to pull off something bold and experiment with colors and textures. I believe the LBD deserves a little break once in a while. So I decided to find creative ways of putting together an outfit with ensembles that feature anything but a dress. Whether it’s a fancy jumpsuit, a metallic pleated skirt, or a tuxedo-inspired look, the following 5 pieces will not only get you into the festive mood, but also let you shine at any holiday cocktail parties.

Glitz and glam

Shiny pieces and metallics define the holiday season. They can definitely function as the ultimate neutral at any holiday party. For a festive punch, I opted for a pair of bold pants with a luxurious damask jacquard prints, which evoke a sophisticated feel. I paired it with a silky blouse with a metallic sheen and ruffle details along the neck and sleeves. This statement piece adds a touch of glam and gives a feminine twist to the holiday dress code.

Blouse and pants: Alice And Olivia (Nordstrom)

The velvet suit

This menswear-inspired look offers and alternative way to mix things up. Simply trade in your classic tuxedo suit with a velvet one. I chose this set because the shimmering kimono-like jacket paired with matching pants keep everything sleek and sexy. Velvet is my favorite formal fabric during the holiday season because it provides a warm sense of luxury. For those that fear an all-velvet look, you can break things up with a silky top, a contrasting texture.

Jacket and pants: Zara

The ultimate jumpsuit

I always feel drawn to jumpsuits for some reason. The overall is an unexpected option when you need to look instantly put-together on casual days. It’s not only an easy to wear piece, but also one appropriate for special events. Choose a tailored and formal-esque jumpsuit — look for a balanced fit and avoid silhouettes that are too baggy. I love the idea of a monochrome jumpsuit that can flatter any body type. So I chose this burgundy piece and paired it with a statement necklace and a tailored coat with subtly metallic details.

Jumpsuit and coat: COS

Rise and shine

Metallic skirts can be the go-to perfect option once the holiday party season is in full swing. You can wear it during the day in the office and at a cocktail party after work. Simply by switching to stiletto and adding a furry or a snakeskin clutch, you can elevate the look. I love how the shine factor is mixed with other textures and unexpected combinations. A black top with little frills was the first thing popped into my head. It’s delicate and feminine. Plus, you can layer it with a cool leather jacket for an edgy twist.

Skirt and top: BP (Nordstrom)

Fairy tale story

A maxi tulle skirt is a great substitute for a traditional dress. The luxurious fabric creates a fairy tale look and will help you stand out in a crowd. There are so many options when it comes to tulle. For a full glam effect, you can pair the voluminous skirt with an embellished or sequins top. For a classy look, pair it with a basic blouse an a statement accessory. I paired the tulle here with a silk fabric with dotted mesh and lace details, and finished the look with red pumps.

What’s In Store? End Of Season Transitional Sale Items

The excitement of end-of-season sales, especially for a shopaholic like me, may lead to unnecessary purchases. However, the temptation to buy dozens of trendy pieces, just because it’s related to two magic words, final markdowns or clearance sale, will ultimately make me end up with a closet full of unworn clothing, hanging there with the price tag still attached and a real guilty feeling.

Before going on a shopping spree, there are a few things you should be aware of. The most important thing is trying to focus on the items worth buying, like fashion pieces that you can still wear next season or basic garments that will never go out of style. One way to control an impulse buy is to ask yourself whether you would wear this piece more than once and if would you consider owning this item if it wasn’t on sale.

To help you approach sales in a smart way, here are five outfits I have tried, from the summer collection, that are worth the investment and will make the transition from summer to fall more smoothly:

Rock ‘n’ roll vibe: Zara

If there was ever a garment that can be worn all season long, while maintaining a cool vibe, I would definitely say it belongs to the rock ‘n’ roll tee and the leather jacket. They are both versatile pieces that look great with classy high waisted trousers, as well with a denim mini or skinny jeans. A leather jacket is a timeless piece for any wardrobe and it’s also an integral part of our fall wardrobe. To make a statement, you can wear it with red jeans, that infuse colour into your everyday wardrobe and can works for multiple occasions.

High quality pieces: Club Monaco

The best time to buy quality and value piece is during end-of-season sales, when the prices are affordable. It’s better to look for trans-seasonal pieces which you can wear now by itself or layer later, when fall arrives. Here is my pick from Club Monaco, a lightweight, 100% silk dress with a unique paisley pattern and a versatile day to night silhouette. You can pair it with flat sandals or sneakers for an effortlessly casual look, or wear it with high heels and a fancy clutch for an after hours look.

Back to basic: COS Store

Buying trendy pieces for half price at the end of a season is tempting, however investing on timeless minimalist pieces will be the smarter option. Try to focus on clothing that will last for a longer period of time and can take into the early days of fall. COS is the perfect place to find clean-lined classic pieces, that will always keep you looking sophisticated. I opted for relaxed fit trousers with pleated hems in green and paired it with a basic top.

Black and white with a little twist: Topshop

You can never go wrong with clean and modern black-and-white look, especially when it’s organized into patterns like checkered or stripes. Since black and white goes with everything, I paired the striped crop top and lace skirt with a furry pink sandals, which injected some fun vibes to the polished outfit. The fluffy material continues to be a big hit for fall 2017 and it also allows you to get in the mood for coziness, that resembles the fall days ahead.

Florals Forever: French Connection

Floral print, especially tropical ones seem to always be attached to spring/summer collections. By adding cool neutrals, the print can be transferred easily from summer to fall. Additionally, floral print is no longer exclusive to the blooming season, so you can carry your favourite prints into the cooler weather. These statement skinny jeans are definitely suitable for a chilly climate. Simply wear it with a cozy sweater or with a cropped puffer jacket and finish the look with an ankle boots.

Tried and Tested- Reiss Summer Offerings

As the weather heats up, it’s time to refresh your wardrobe with new easy breezy summer pieces. I decided to checkout the popular London-based fashion brand REISS, which landed in Canada two years ago. REISS is well known for it effortless and elegant style with unique and sophisticated designs, which set them apart on the street.

The perfect summer styles that’s also up to date and flattering at the same time is a challenging task, but luckily REISS offers a variety of collections with a recent trend guide from tropical palm prints to breezy dresses; and of course tailored pieces that never go out of style and can suit for any occasion.

Here are five options for the hot season that will also bring on the sun to your wardrobe:

Ladylike Silhouettes

Step into the sun with a pretty lace dress that embodies the fresh feel of early days of summer. This dress is the perfect choice when you can’t decide on what to wear for a wedding or a rooftop cocktail party. The dedicated lace details in a shade of thyme green makes it a one of a kind piece and evoke an elegant femininity and playfulness. It’s not just that the lady like shape flatter almost any body shapes, but also that the lace texture will photograph beautifully for your social media.

Shorts and bright

The warm weather season welcomes loose-fitting shorts and a rich colour palette. Therefore, these shorts are on my list of Summer must-haves. They are lightweight and super feminine, which goes to show that shorts can totally be sophisticated. The beach-inspired hues create the perfect summery outfit that also works as an evening look. On breezy nights, just add a soft jacket and a pair of heels for a classy take on the ultimate summer staple.

When in doubt wear culottes

Culottes are the ultimate solution for achieving a chic and sophisticated look while feeling comfy. The breezy and light fabric will allow you to wear them all summer long. This pair, which hang right below the knee in a blush hue, was balanced perfectly between a tailor silhouette and an effortless vibe, which makes them look smarter yet playful. To avoid looking too girly, I teamed it with a black top that is also work appropriate. To take this look from day to evening, just add a fancy bag and a pair of heels and a vivid colour like red.

Tropical getaway

Palm tree print is one of my favourite looks for the summer. The traditional tropical leaf usually comes in bright colours but Reiss’s maxi dress in soft pastels caught my eyes immediately. There is something about the light green, pink, and blue hues that can take your mind to sunny places even on a gloomy day. This maxi dress is a stylish and defiant take on the tropical trend and will look amazing with nude accessories.

Walking work of art

This watercolour dress is the simplest way to be chic yet effortless this summer. For me, fashion is a form of art — the rich colours along with the abstract prints look like a walking work of art. The feminine silhouette with the long sleeves will be suitable for chilly days. Keep in mind and let the pattern do the talking and pair it with simple accessories that won’t steal the focus from the dress.

Tried and Tested – Spring Fashion Trends at Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue has finally arrived in Toronto, and there is no better time then now to check out all the fashion trends the high-end department store has to offer for spring 2017. In case even the prospect of browsing through the new season makes you feel exhausted, I took it upon myself to try on all the hottest trends for your entertainment.

Walking into Saks Fifth Avenue made me feel like a kid in a candy store. With more than 60 well known designers including Gucci, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Fendi, Prada, and so many more featuring all their newest collection, it was hard for me to stay indifferent.

The boho skirt is back

I don’t know about you, but my gypsy soul and I are defiantly ready for Spring. I had my eyes on this tiered silky skirt, which is not only eye catching but totally wearable. As you know, the coolest way to up your style game is to play with different textures or elements. To give the hippy skirt a cool twist, I paired it with a crop denim jacket with a studded point collar. I love the edgy jacket against the flowy femme flare of the skirt.

The blooming season

Even though mixing prints can be tricky, there are some ways to pull off this trend like a pro. Since head-to-toe florals are a key trend for spring 2017, I decided to pair the off the shoulder floral top with an embroidered chambray mini skirt, both from Alice+Olivia. This is the coolest way to embrace Spring without feeling like you are trying too hard. The easy breezy relaxed top balances out the A-line mini skirt.

When in doubt wear stripes

Stripes lovers, I have fashion forward news for you: Spring 2017 is all about bold and bright — stripes in primary colours like red, blue, and yellow are having their moments. The clever way to do it is by sticking to one item that will be the focal point in your outfit, while keeping the rest of your outfit in a neutral hue. I have tried to take it one step further in the spice level, pairing the colourful top with a crochet skirt with fringed trim.

Head to toe Ruffles

Ruffles is one of those trends that we’ve seen everywhere, but it seems like we just can’t get enough of them. I guess some of you are still concerned about incorporating frills pieces into your wardrobe, but trust me, you can rock ruffles from head to toe without looking too girly. This look from Phillip Lam proves it. The statement making pants and top with the side ruffles give the entire look an edgy spin, while keeping it effortless and casual.

Top and Pants: 3.1 Phillip Lim

The little blue dress

A classy blue dress is a fresh take to the little black dress. Since LBD is a Spring-Summer staple, which can also be flattering for events like weddings, I thought it might be a great idea to consider switching to blue. The monochromatic colour looks classy and timeless. I choose this dress because it is a perfect spring dress that you can wear with layers: over a turtleneck when it’s chilly or with bare arms when it’s warm.

What’s In Store? 5 Must-Have Items On Sale Now And Perfect For Spring

With the colder temps, spring seems so far away. However, there is no better time than now to freshen up your wardrobe by taking advantage of the end of the season sales. By splurging a little now, you will save later and put that money toward something else.

I decided to make things a little easy for you and went to several brands to select the top fashion pieces that will continue to shine in the next season. I collected five trends that promise to make the transition from winter to spring smooth and stylish .

Racing stripes – Zara

The athleisure trend for Spring 2017 is all about stripes in any size and colour, with a strong primary-hued stripes and racing flag details. Be sure to make a statement with standout colourful stripes and don’t hesitate to mix and match different stripes together. The look above features a sweater and pants from Zara and is the perfect example of how to combine different size of stripes in a classy way while maintaining a sporty vibe.

Ruffles on ruffles, Cos Stores

I hope you aren’t fed up with ruffles because this trend isn’t leaving anytime soon. Frills and ruffles were all over the runways. And this spring, it will be more about layers that create a more voluminous statement.

Of course it doesn’t mean that you need to go crazy with ruffles, but I do believe that a little extra fabric here and there never hurt anybody. With this thought I went straight to COS and chose some items from the sales department. These shoulders gave me an edgy look, while the mini skirt with the cute frills on the side brought out my feminine side.

Back to the 80’s, Aritzia

These Aritzia asymmetrical pants in khaki beige are a modern version of the 80s high waisted trousers with a roomy fit on top, tapered at the ankle. The pants made my smile even wider when I found out that they are on sale. It’s the perfect mix of easy to wear item and chic. I paired it with vintage inspired blouse to add a luxurious touch.

Fifty shades of pink, Topshop

Get ready to reveal your girly side, because this sweet colour is going to be everywhere this upcoming spring. The good news is that any shade of pink will work. From baby pink to bubblegum hue or even fuchsia, simply pick the shade that works best for you.

I decided to take the trend one step further by creating an outfit in head to toe pink. I picked up a sweater, coat and skirt from Topshop‘s sale section. There is something about this rosy hue that presents strong sense of femininity and boldness.

Flower Power, Club Monaco

This trend has caught my eyes because it’s like a little note from spring saying “don’t lose hope, the blooming season is on the way”. Florals are often a staple print during spring and summer, and this upcoming season will be no different. Don’t be afraid to cover yourself with everything from traditional to abstract floral prints — the louder the better.

My artistic essence came to life in a form of pants and dress I found in Club Monaco at an amazing sale price. This allover floral print dress will no doubt take you from winter to spring with minimum effort while giving you maximum style!
