Holiday Gift Guide 2017: Bag Edition

“It is a known fact that a woman do carry an evening bag at dinner time.” Now this famous quote from the now iconic documentary Paris Is Burning holds more truth than people think. However, the quote should be interpreted by the fact that any outfit always feels a little more complete once you add a stunning bag to it. The perfect bag also has the ability to boost one’s confidence and mood. Allowing the wearer to express their personal style with a bag of their choosing. And for that reason, we here at Novella feel that choosing the perfect bag for that perfect someone is always a great gift giving choice for the holiday season. However, choosing the right bag can sometimes be extremely hard and with so many bags and personalities out there, having a guide on what to get is often very helpful and time-saving.

Forever 21 Faux Leather Crossbody Bag: $33.90

Photo: Forever 21

As fashion grows and progresses, so does the need to use it as a form of self-expression. Unlike the conventional bags most people are used to seeing. Today’s purses are no longer about functionality and stand more as a test of creative integrity and self-expression. One big trend that really encompasses this idea is the mini bag, while it may not be the most functional bag to its size, this Forever 21 mini faux patent leather bag is all about visual appeal rather than functionality. Sure you may not be able to fit everything in there. But this bag does hold its own perfectly fine as a party bag or evening bag. And its punchy mix of fire engine red and shiny metal hardware give this bag an edgy 80s personality that’s been all the rage the past few years.

Chanel Boy Bag: $7175.00

Photo: Chanel

The Chanel Boy Bag may be the bag to end all bags. With its iconic silhouette and chain strap. The Boy bag has become synonymous with Paris upper echelon. However, with a name like Chanel on the bag, the cost is automatically going to be quite astronomical for a purse. But its the quality of materials and craftsmanship that really makes this bag an extra special gift. Rather than purchasing your special someone a regular black Chanel Boy bag. Opt for this glittery sequined version. Which mixes the perfect amount of after-dark glamour with the conventional look of an all black bag.

Zara Knotted Bucket Bag: $49.90

Photo: Zara

Zara has a long-standing reputation for creating fashionable high-quality clothing and accessories that merge the high fashion appeal of the runway with functional everyday attire. This simple black shoulder bag is the perfect for someone who’s always on the go. It’s roomy design and thick strap are bound to last for those who can’t help but carry everything but the kitchen sink with them. What sets this bag apart from regular leather totes is its fresh design. The bag itself is very architectural. With the knotted straps creating a very angular silhouette that compliments the triangular shape of the bag.

Maison Margiela Patchwork Pouch: $2660.00

For those who want something more interesting than the average bag, Maison Margiela created this unconventional clutch. Utilizing the brand’s love for deconstruction. The clutch is decorated with pieces of Margiela staple patterns and fabrics. Creating an entirely unique look for those daring enough to wear it. Another interesting aspect of the bag is its shape. Rather than opting for a traditional square or rectangle clutch. The brand created an exaggerated and extremely elongated rectangle clutch that breaks the boundaries of what bags and clutches should look like. While this may not be the most functional option on the list, it does stand alone as a very interesting statement piece.

Aldo Wenang Light Blue Women’s Crossbody: $70.00

These days bags can be whatever you’d like them to be and often, the more colourful and fun they are, the better. This fairytale Aldo bag brings the punch of colour many are looking for in the new year. The pastel colour scheme and embroidery is fun and playful without being juvenile. Which is often a very important thing for the purse aficionado on your holiday gift list. What makes this bag really special is how all of the colours and hardware work perfectly together. Rather than being jarring, the bag compliments itself. Especially the blue to pink gradient that makes of the colour of the bag.

One month, One Style: Statement Zippers

Whether you like it or not, summer is coming to an end. But if there is something that really makes me excited about fall is that the new season refreshes our wardrobes. Though, truth be told, the athleisure trend will continue to play a role in the industry this fall. To maintain practicality, which goes along with the sporty casual lifestyle denoted by athleisure, designers draw inspiration from little details related to the après-ski look. Zippers is one of them.

Zippers have been spotted everywhere from the runway to the streets, and, since in fashion every detail counts, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that circle zipper pulls found their way, slowly but surely, into the world of everyday fashion. Just a functional accessory? Not anymore. Below, five creative ways to let the versatile sporty style transfer from the treadmill to your daily life.

Zip-neck sweaters

This fall, fashion is serving up a fresh way to pull off the sweater weather look. Zippers give a modern twist to the cozy sweater — it’s not only versatile but also gives your appearance a sense of effortless sophistication. You can tuck the sweater into the waist of a wide-leg trouser for a ’70s inspired look, or pair it with a long flowy skirt for a perfect balance between sporty and feminine. For an office look, pair it with a formal suit – the contrast between the casual zip neck sweater and the classy elegant suit blend together and complement each other.

Polo shirts

The exposed zipper can also appear on shirt fronts, usually with a circular pull. It’s not only a practical thing — it acts as an accessory and lifts your outfit, especially in cases where the puller is large enough to make a statement. A singular zipper has the power to upgrade a basic black polo, as it gives the shirt a retro feel. It can also function as a layering piece once the temperature starts to drop. For a fashion forward look, choose a neon color plastic zipper that gives the top a sporty feel with a modern vibe.

Ankle length boots

As genuine a wardrobe staple, ankle boots are one of the most versatile item all year round, plus it’s never goes out of style.

As a genuine wardrobe staple, ankle boots are one of the most versatile items all year round. Plus, it’s never really out of style. This fall, they are getting a little update. The conspicuous zipper on the side brings modern edge even to the simplest classic booties. For the early days of autumn, simply pair these boots with a floaty sundress and a biker jacket, or style them with a pair of leggings and an oversized knit.

Dresses

Visible zippers on a dress makes it edgy with a sexy twist. Whether it is a little black dress, full skirt bottom, or a gown, almost every style can look great with a zipper in the front or in the back. For a glam evening look, add a bit of drama by wearing a dress with an open zipper on the back as part of the design. you will turn heads with your every step.

Jeans and trousers

Designers are constantly looking for creative ways to spice up their collections. Vetements is definitely one of them. In their last collaboration with Levi’s, the brand designed front to back zipper jeans that also zips down in between the butt cheeks. We do not encourage you to take the zipper trend too far, but we do believe that adding an edgy twist to a standard pair of jeans never hurt anybody. Exposed zipper pullers work very well with A line silhouette trousers or high waisted skinny jeans. The outstanding zippers give a fashionable yet casual feel, while minimizing the need for additional accessories.

Mastering the cool girl style for summer 2017

If you’ve ever had a secret wish to be the coolest person in the room (or on the beach) this summer, there are a few signature styling nuances that have already been identified (or adopted) by it girls around the globe. In order to master the concept of coolness and spice up your current wardrobe, here are some of the most eye-catching accessories and garments we spotted on Instagram. They will boost your style to the next level by keeping you up-to-date.

Wide brim straw hat

Wide brim straw hats are no longer an indicator of social status or just functional item that protects the skin from the sun. There is something about a straw hat that gives off a glamorous beach vibe with a country style twist, so no wonder it’s the hot trend for summer 2017. It’s a great way to express our individual style especially if the hat is embellished with tassels, colourful pompoms, or fun slogans. The choices are endless: You can offset a feminine oversize floppy hat with a “borrowed from the boys” look or pair a Panama hat with a girly gingham skirt and a linen shirt. Nothing says summer better than a custom-embroidered straw hat.

The Basket bag

Another straw obsession is the basket bag, which was captured just about everywhere this summer. The basket bag which has been seen in Balenciaga, Mark Cross, Dolce & Gabbana, and — the favourite bag among it girls — Alexa Chung and Jeanne Damas, has become a must have accessory staple. We couldn’t help but think that you should follow their fashionable lead and consider swapping your everyday bag for a basket one, which is also very Instagrammable. The good news is that there are many versions of the stylish bag that will also meet your needs: from a rectangular one to a circular one, from structured and boxy to a big fluid tote. Due to its popularity the bags are almost out of stock almost everywhere, so get your hands on it as quickly as possible before it’s too late.

Big statement earrings

What better way to inject some fun to high summer looks than a few colourful pompoms, tassels, and fringes? The statement earrings are having their moment right now and the bolder they are the better. Adding a punch of colour to your outfit may not be suitable for everyone, but it certainly makes fashion more fascinating. Pompom earrings are very strong on the street and on the high fashion scene this season, especially in a spectrum of vibrant hues, which ensure that the outfit will be noticeable even from afar. To bring attention to your ears, make sure to keep everything else simple and avoid wearing a statement necklace.

Gingham style

One of the biggest hits this season is one always associated witch picnic tables. Apparently it’s possible to wear this childish pattern and still feel sexy. A brief overview on Instagram proves that gingham is completely appropriate for grown-ups. The girly gingham received a quick makeover and has been injected with a dose of cool. To work the trend properly, don’t hesitate to bare your shoulders or rock it with asymmetric crop tops. You can also choose a refreshing colour combo as an alternative to classic black or blue and white, like electric purple and forest green. Another option is to accent the print with bold accessories and neutral tones.

Pool slide sandals

The pool slide, known as the ‘ugly’ shoes of the summer, still remains a huge hit among the coolest fashionistas. Not only because of the effortless comfy feel they evoke, but also because the average cool girl loves out of the box pieces and these shoes definitely meets her needs. High-end designers like as Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton have already come out with their interpretations of the sporty slides, but you can also always get your hands on the classic brands like Fila and Adidas. This season you can wear it in just about any way your heart desires. Just remember to open your mind to unexpected combinations. Rock the look by adding a pair socks or wear them with fancy dresses. The slides are not limited to rubber soles: We saw them in vivid colours and with delicate floral or 3D embellishments, in leopard prints, with fringes and pompoms, and even covered with a lot of fur.

Paris Street Style 101: A Masterclass

One can argue that Paris truly is the birthplace of modern fashion. It’s stars, both in fashion and entertainment, have inspired droves of people around the world to adopt a way of life and a way of dressing that is distinctly Parisian. And with countless style muses to chose from (Bridgitte, Jane, Lea, Carla, Carmen, Soko et al.) one really can’t go wrong when looking to the streets of Paris for style inspiration.

Simplicity

PHOTO: JONATHAN DANIEL PRYCE

One of the most striking things you’ll see on the streets of Paris isn’t the flashing lights or beautiful architecture because Parisian dressing really isn’t about the flash or glitz, or all the bells and whistles that some other cities may require a person to wear to get noticed. Paris is about an organic style that comes from one’s environment, from their childhood, and from what feels right in the here and now. So it isn’t rare to see simple looks that incorporate small details that nod to the wearer’s personality. Whether that be a print or a family heirloom necklace, the French know that keeping the outfit simple and fresh always allows the details to come to life.

Chanel, Chanel, Chanel!

PHOTO: SANDRA SEMBURG

Now Chanel may be out of most people’s price ranges, but nothing says Paris like Chanel. Ever since Gabrielle set out to change the face of women’s fashion in France decades ago, Chanel has been the most recognisable symbol of French fashion. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that wearing Chanel around town could possibly be the most Parisian thing one can do besides visiting Paris itself.

Très Chic, Très Féminine

PHOTO: CHRISTIAN VIERIG

While most of the time Paris can be the land of sharp Mugler suits, and pristine Dior dresses, it’s also the city that brought us candy coloured pastries and Pompadour gowns. The old courts of Versailles can still be felt in Paris to this day in the ultra feminine clothing seen around the city. Ruffles, pastels, and sequins are all fair game on the streets of Paris, just as long as the outfit is tres chic. Because the Parisian fashionista doesn’t dress feminine to look childish, they dress feminine to exude a softness and delicate strength that comes with feminine clothing.

The Higher the Heels, The Closer to Dieu

PHOTO: JONATHAN DANIEL PRYCE

Paris is the city of A. the classic Chanel flat or B. the most daring (and likely uncomfortable) of heels. Apart from Russia, France seems to be a safe haven for heel lovers and nowhere is that more visible than in the city of lights. Every time fashion weeks rolls around, it’d be surprising to see women walk around down with anything but the most pencil-thin stilettos. The beauty of super high heels is the boost in confidence it can give a person and the fashionistas of Paris are never one’s to walk the world on their shoulders.

 Neo-Romanticism

PHOTO: CHRISTIAN VIERIG

Paris is a city built on romance and with that romance comes romantic dressing. Now you don’t have to run around dressed as if a Harlequin novel threw up on way, but a little throwback frill can go a long way. One way to make sure Parisian romanticism works when putting an outfit together. Instead of going full on Edwardian high-neck glamour. One should opt for something vintage yet sexy. Think Moulin Rouge in 2017. One of the greatest pros to dressing with romantic flair is the versatility of it. Victorian and Edwardian can easily be paired with lingerie or athletic wear, which adds a modern flair to any outfit.

Joie De Vivre

PHOTO: MELODIE JENG

The “Joy of Life” is a concept that is distinctly French. It represents living life in a way that allows one to be who they are and live how they want. It’s about striving for self-love and happiness. The colourful Joie De Vivre of native Parisian’s can easily translate into everyday outfits with cheerful and thoughtful pops of colour. Stripes, patterns, polka dots, and florals can all add an effervescence to anyone’s wardrobe. Just be sure to always wear colours in a very chic way. The Parisian fashionista wears colour and pattern as an extension of their own cheerfulness, not for the sake of getting attention or attracting the cameras of photographers.

Fashion Destination

Summer is just around the corner, and for the fashionistas among us, it means we are gearing up for the perfect stylish getaway. Choosing a fashion destination from an endless list of options can be a challenging mission. How does one choose between a relaxing day in a tropical beach wearing a floppy hat, oversized sunglasses, and a tiny bikini, or following one’s inner bohemian soul to the heat of the desert in a maxi breezy dress and cross-body fringe bag, or being in a cosmopolitan city for the shopping sprees and coffee breaks in an elegant atmosphere. To help you find the destination that speaks to your fashion-loving soul, we asked five talented people from different fields in our local fashion industry, what their fashionable place for a dreamy summer vacation will be this year.

Annie, Fashion Designer and owner of Annie Tompson

Fashion Destination: Berlin, Germany/Tel Aviv, Israel

My most recent favourite fashion destinations are Tel Aviv and Berlin. Street style in both Berlin and Tel Aviv are thought provoking. I love Berlin for the arts and culture. I enjoy art scenes with grit and Berlin definitely has grit; textures and colours in paintings, in window displays, in historic and modern architectures.

Modern fashion and fashion accessory design in Tel Aviv seems unique in its own aesthetics and fodder for my own inspiration. I happened upon great footwear design while in Tel Aviv/Jaffa last April. We proudly display these designs in our Toronto Studio and have made them available to all who love interesting fashion.

Fashion destination: Tulum, Mexico

My favourite destination would be Tulum, Mexico. It’s a tropical artist hub to unwind in and be inspired at the same time. Located on the same shoreline as the popular Playa Del Carmen, the resorts of Tulum are far more reclusive and private. The rustic stone architecture highlighted by cotton rope hammocks is the perfect spot where linen dresses can be worn with strappy leather sandals and, of course, some gold accessories.

Fashion Destination: The Amalfi Coast- Italy

Having summered on the Amalfi Coast for my honeymoon, it quickly rose to the top of the ranks of my favourite summer fashion destinations. Italy is arguably the fashion capital of the world, and while I make an effort to dabble in interesting Italian menswear from time to time, the Amalfi Coast is a major source of inspiration for me. It’s the cross between a relaxed Californian style and an upscale, prim and proper Italian fashion. There’s no other place like it in Italy. Making a mandatory stop in Amalfi & Positano would be non-negotiable for my heart mate and I for every upcoming trip we would have to Italy.

Fashion Destination: Ibiza, Spain

I’d say my Summer fashion destination would be Ibiza. I’ve never been, but I can imagine it would be amazing with it being a top destination for both fashion and music fans alike. The Ibizan style scene is all about expressing yourself with a bold hippie chic vibe. I love music festival style and Ibiza has a bit of that same vibe, a fuss-free laidback cool with light weight fabrics and bohemian prints.

Fashion Destination: Tokyo, Japan

It’s definitely a tough decision choosing between so many great fashion cities. I love bright colourful and edgy fashion and am really drawn to the neon lights of Tokyo, the city which breaks all the rules when it comes to colours and textures. I would love to experience the street fashion in the famous districts of Harajuku, Shibuya, and Ginza, where old tradition meets trends.
