One month, One Style: Statement Zippers

Whether you like it or not, summer is coming to an end. But if there is something that really makes me excited about fall is that the new season refreshes our wardrobes. Though, truth be told, the athleisure trend will continue to play a role in the industry this fall. To maintain practicality, which goes along with the sporty casual lifestyle denoted by athleisure, designers draw inspiration from little details related to the après-ski look. Zippers is one of them.

Zippers have been spotted everywhere from the runway to the streets, and, since in fashion every detail counts, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that circle zipper pulls found their way, slowly but surely, into the world of everyday fashion. Just a functional accessory? Not anymore. Below, five creative ways to let the versatile sporty style transfer from the treadmill to your daily life.

Zip-neck sweaters

This fall, fashion is serving up a fresh way to pull off the sweater weather look. Zippers give a modern twist to the cozy sweater — it’s not only versatile but also gives your appearance a sense of effortless sophistication. You can tuck the sweater into the waist of a wide-leg trouser for a ’70s inspired look, or pair it with a long flowy skirt for a perfect balance between sporty and feminine. For an office look, pair it with a formal suit – the contrast between the casual zip neck sweater and the classy elegant suit blend together and complement each other.

Polo shirts

The exposed zipper can also appear on shirt fronts, usually with a circular pull. It’s not only a practical thing — it acts as an accessory and lifts your outfit, especially in cases where the puller is large enough to make a statement. A singular zipper has the power to upgrade a basic black polo, as it gives the shirt a retro feel. It can also function as a layering piece once the temperature starts to drop. For a fashion forward look, choose a neon color plastic zipper that gives the top a sporty feel with a modern vibe.

Ankle length boots

As genuine a wardrobe staple, ankle boots are one of the most versatile item all year round, plus it’s never goes out of style.

As a genuine wardrobe staple, ankle boots are one of the most versatile items all year round. Plus, it’s never really out of style. This fall, they are getting a little update. The conspicuous zipper on the side brings modern edge even to the simplest classic booties. For the early days of autumn, simply pair these boots with a floaty sundress and a biker jacket, or style them with a pair of leggings and an oversized knit.

Dresses

Visible zippers on a dress makes it edgy with a sexy twist. Whether it is a little black dress, full skirt bottom, or a gown, almost every style can look great with a zipper in the front or in the back. For a glam evening look, add a bit of drama by wearing a dress with an open zipper on the back as part of the design. you will turn heads with your every step.

Jeans and trousers

Designers are constantly looking for creative ways to spice up their collections. Vetements is definitely one of them. In their last collaboration with Levi’s, the brand designed front to back zipper jeans that also zips down in between the butt cheeks. We do not encourage you to take the zipper trend too far, but we do believe that adding an edgy twist to a standard pair of jeans never hurt anybody. Exposed zipper pullers work very well with A line silhouette trousers or high waisted skinny jeans. The outstanding zippers give a fashionable yet casual feel, while minimizing the need for additional accessories.

Tried and Tested: Levi’s New 501 Skinny Jeans

It’s hard to argue that Levi’s® is not synonymous with jeans. Over the years, the denim market has grown tremendously, and while some brands have come and gone, the iconic denim brand still remains. When we heard about the next member of the Levi’s® 501® family — the new 501® Skinny — we knew we wanted to try them on and put them to the test. Our fashion contributor Liat Neuman got her hands on the SUPERCHARGER wash for women, and our Editor-in Chief Drew Brown was able to try out the HILLMAN wash for men.

Both pairs of jeans are a new kind of skinny jeans, featuring everything we all love about the classic 501® original, but with that skinnier fit. The 501® Skinny adds an authentic, vintage feel to your closet that only the creators of the blue jeans can offer.

“We are very careful when we touch the 501®, and we do it with a lot of respect,” explains Jonathan Cheung, the Head of Design at Levi’s® Brand. “People have been altering their vintage 501® jeans for a snug, skinnier fit for years, so we followed that as inspiration and created a vintage-looking 501® Skinny.”

Liat and Drew headed to Nordstorm and selected items that will take their jeans from day to night and over the weekends.

Drew’s Day look:

For my day time look, I paired the 501® Skinny with a faux fur bomber jacket from Express and a Trovata t-shirt from my own closet. This look can take me from the office to drinks with friends, or to one of the many work-related events. I have been a fan of Levi’s for many years and I love the fact that they always work well with items from my wardrobe, and, unlike the designer jeans I have purchased, my Levi’s still look brand new.

Drew’s Evening look:

I dressed up the skinny jeans with a Paul Smith printed button-up and a blazer for a chic nighttime look. The fit of the jeans and the blazer makes the look sharp and dressy rather than casual. Being vertically challenged, I love skinny jeans because they make me feel and appear a bit taller.

Drew’s Weekend look:

I fell in love with this sweatshirt from KENZO and they look great with the jeans. This look is perfect for brunch on the weekend or running errands around the city. You can style them with a pair of cool white kicks or your favourite pair of shoes. One thing I did notice during this test was not only did the jeans make everything I picked look great but they are also  super comfy, which is a plus.

Liat’s Day look:

Blouse: Theory, Jacket: BCBG, Heels: Bata

During the day, I am usually juggling business meeting and my duties as a mom, so I was looking for an outfit that will be comfy yet put together. You can’t go wrong with a classy pair of Levi’s that creates a professional look. I chose a structure black blazer for a slightly serious appeal and paired it with an office-friendly crisp white button down shirt with cutout details. I completed the look by adding nude glossy pumps for an instant elegant-polished touch.

Liat’s Evening Look:

Shirt: Robert Rodriguez, Heels: Guess

After a busy work day, the night requires a more glamorous and sexy outfit, so I decided to transform my day look into a night one without changing my favourite Levi’s jeans. I picked up this playful off the shoulder top, since it’s not only a huge trend this season but also very flattering to any body type. To add a gorgeous pop of colour, there is nothing like pair of stiletto heels with floral prints to finish the look.

Liat’s Weekend look:

Shirt:The Kooples, Sneakers: Adidas

During the weekend, wearing a comfy outfit is my first priority. As such, I decided to adopt the classic Canadian tuxedo,  the denim on denim ensemble. It’s effortless, easy to wear, and never goes out of style. I pair the jeans with a embroidered button down denim shirt and a pair of Adidas floral sneakers because of the cool fun-vibe they create. Since these jeans are high waisted, they give my body a great shape and allow me to tuck the shirt in without having to worry about my imperfections.

The new edition will be available for men and women in a variety of finishes and in light to dark washes with the true original 501® button fly. For more information, visit the Levi’s website here.

The old is the new trend

The theory that history tends to repeat itself can’t be denied when it comes to fashion. Think about all the pieces that you used to wear in your youth that are currently having their glory moments again. Appreciated designers and coveted brands have already seen the potential in bringing back successful pieces that have proved themselves in the past. This strategy is also known as retro marketing, and it’s all about taking advantage of nostalgia for the past to make current items more attractive and meaningful to the customer.

For Fall 2o16, it will come as no surprise that observing the new collections will feel like déjà vu. Be prepared to let your youth memories cycle back into your life again. Here’s a list of the old pieces that become new again:

Levi’s Mom jeans

One of the biggest  trends of the season is “mom jeans,” those high waisted denim jean with the back pockets, embodied by the the iconic Levi’s 505These jeans were a huge success during the 80s and early 90s and considered a must-have staple.

As a current fashion staple, “mom jeans” got a fashion forward update. Levi’s released a new collection of vintage inspired jeans, called the Wedgie Jean, which showcase all the assets of the feminine body- waist and hips- and balances between the cool attitude and sex appeal vibe. Levi’s made these jeans from a low-stretch denim, promising to highlight all your best assets.

Gazelle sneakers

Another item that you probably cherished in your childhood was the tri-striped, suede Gazelle which was recently brought back by Adidas. The leading sportswear brand evaluated the potential of the nostalgic style and decided to relaunch the Gazelle heritage sneaker with legendary model and Gazelle-lover, Kate Moss.

The sneakers were originally made in 1963 as professional soccer shoes. Their popularity grew high during the 90s and we surely believe that they will instantly be adopted by all street style lovers and  fashionistas.

Dr. Martens

Dr Martens, the iconic grungy shoes with the heavy sole boots and the yellow stitching, are returning back directly from the 90s. Whether they’re seen on the Prada and LouisVuitton runways, or on the streets, Dr. Martens allows you to channel your Seattle neo-grunge spirit. We highly recommended giving them a lady-like twist (think feminine skirt or dresses) so blurring the line between masculinity and femininity will be done perfectly.

 Cavin Klein slip dress

Riding on the 90s wave, another throwback piece is having a fashion revival: the slip dress. Kate Moss in her silver Calvin Klein slip dress will remain forever etched in our memory, so no wonder the silky feminine piece has emerged back into our wardrobe without a blink.

In our modern life, the slip dress lends itself enormously well to the art of layering. You can simply wear it in any way or style. Our suggestion, for the cooler days ahead, is to balance between coziness and femininity by layering it with a t-shirt underneath and a bomber jacket on top, or pairing the silky fabric with a soft oversized cardigan.

Tracksuits by Juicy couture

Get ready for a big comeback directly from the 2000s, the tracksuits. The velour athletic set has a serious style statement this season and has already been seen on the catwalks of fashion houses like ChloeBurberry, Gucci and Loewe. The tracksuit originally appeared with Juicy Couture as part of their signature style and it was only a matter of time until the tracksuits made their way back into our lives. Celebrities were caught wearing them off duty back in the 2000s. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton owned one in every colour, while Jennifer Lopez showed up with the bright pink short version in her music video.

You can embrace the sporty look however you choose: with loafers, trainers, ankle boots, or even with strappy heels. Tracksuits also look amazingly stylish with tailored pieces, but keep in mind that  confidence and a cool attitude are fully required here.
