Regardless if you’re a man or a woman, skin changes happen and it’s important to be ready for them. LAB SERIES, an Estée Lauder brand, introduced a new line of men’s grooming products guaranteed to change the way you take care of your skin. Incorporating these five essential skincare products will help to recharge, brighten, and energize your skin for decades to come.

Wash it Up: Clean and Clear

Whether your skin type is dry, oily, or a combination of the two, adding a high-performance face wash is essential for a clean and healthy looking complexion. This multifunctional All-In-One Face Cleansing Gel ($18) deeply cleans, refreshes and balances the complexion without over-drying or irritating the skin. This product also works well for guys with facial hair due to its rich and clean lather. Use morning and night for optimum results.

Moisture Lock

If you haven’t been introduced to the extreme hydrating benefits of a Solid Water Essence ($47) you’re seriously missing out. This bamboo and ginseng infused ingredient powerhouse helps to maintain the moisture and structural balance in the skin and is an innovation in men’s skincare. Use directly after cleansing for best results. Follow with your favorite LAB SERIES products to complete the regimen.

Recharged Now for Later

As we age, our skin becomes drier and less resilient, making it prone to wrinkles and unsightly sagging. Treat a dry and aging complexion with a Water-Charged Gel Cream ($50). This deeply hydrating, lightly scented gel cream maintains the moisture balance in the skin while protecting it against further signs of aging. Apply to the face and neck twice daily for optimum results.

Facial serums are well known for their high-quality ingredients and their ability to repair and benefit the skin. Brightness and skin vitality is restored. Highly concentrated to protect against environmental pollutants, stressors, and aging skin. Use twice daily for optimum results.

Natural Beauty with Elly Mayday

Source: Forever Yours Lingere

Two years ago, model and social media personality Elly Mayday moved from her hometown of Aylesbury, Saskatchewan, to pursue dreams of traveling the world. She was on the verge of a successful modeling career when a diagnosis of stage-three ovarian cancer and subsequent treatments changed everything.

Mayday experienced many physical and emotional challenges, but she was able to use her illness as a platform to speak about the power of natural beauty and self-acceptance all over the world.

I wanted to show you can be beautiful when you are going through hell…” Mayday says on her website, “I worked really hard on all my shoots because I knew I was doing something that would help others facing cancer as well.”

Mayday’s determination to embody self-confidence and body-positivity even during the throes of chemotherapy catapulted her into international fame. Since then, she has been featured on Good Morning America, in Women’s Weekly Australia, in documentary-film “A Perfect 14,” and has modeled for Lane Bryant’s “I’m no Angel” campaign.

One unexpected thing that had to change during her treatment, says Mayday, was her beauty routine.

I had liked to do my hair,” she says, ”but when I lost it, I had my wigs… I stopped getting my nails done, [because] I would get sick from all the fumes involved in the process and couldn’t keep them on if I had an operation.”

Mayday’s heightened sensitivity to smells and chemicals found in everyday cosmetics led her to seek out natural alternatives for her favourite beauty products. “I started to do a bit of research and realized there were so many unpronounceable ingredients in something as simple as makeup remover,” she says, “I have some close friends in the all-natural, clean-eating world and knew going that route would be better for me.”

According to a research survey conducted by the David Suzuki Association, 80% of beauty products possessed by participants contained at least one of twelve “dirty dozen” ingredients shown to have potentially harmful effects on the body. For some individuals, exposure to these ingredients can cause very serious health problems.

Consumers are advised by health experts to read cosmetic labels and steer clear of toxic ingredients (such as BHA, PEGs, parabens, parfum, petrolatum, sulfates and triclosan) that can be found lurking in many common cosmetic  and beauty products.

For those wishing to try natural alternatives, Elly recommends her following top five favourite all-natural beauty items:

1. Coconut Oil.

I use this for my makeup remover and moisturizer. I like it because it’s available everywhere, travels easily and you can pre-soak cotton swabs for when you’re  on-the-go.”

2. Aluminum-free Deodorant.

“I use Green Beaver Natural Deodorant.”

3. Lia Reese Lipsticks.

“These are allergy-tested, hypoallergenic, not tested on animals and fragrance free. They have great pigment and last all day, plus have a subtle scent of vanilla. There are a ton of options for colors and I like to support Canadian-owned companies.”

4. Taproot Organics Cocoa Face Bar.

“I use this as my face wash. If I’ve forgotten my coconut oil, I have no problem getting my makeup off just using this. It lathers well and gets the job done, and it’s mainly made out of oils that don’t dry my skin out afterwards like a regular bar soap. “

5. Activated Charcoal.

“I use this for a face mask as well as teeth whitener.”

Diet and Fitness: Look Great At Any Age

TEXT: Alexander Sauve

Every decade has its own set of hidden surprises and you have to be ready for them both physically and mentally. Watching your diet and taking care of your health are great ways to ensure you will have longevity and strength in the decades to come. Check out these five easy tips to help ensure you look great at every age.

Moderation Is Key

After basically trying every fad diet out there (and there are many, trust me), I realized that to a degree it’s not what you eat, but how much and when. It’s all about moderation. You can still enjoy your favorite high-calorie drinks and foods, but they should be limited. Some would argue eating small meals multiple times a day, while others would counter and say you should eat less. The trick is to a find your balance. Everyone is different, and your diet and lifestyle choices should reflect these differences.

Your Metabolism is NOT Working Against You

There is a big misconception that with age comes a sluggish metabolism. This is only partly true. According to an article published in the National Library of Medicine (NIH), although our metabolisms are far slower then they were when we were kids, much of the weight gain we experience as we age is due to becoming less active. Priorities and habits begin to change. Instead of heading out to a hottest party or a club opening, you opt to Netflix and chill. Careers and family will begin to take center stage, and so will pizza and ice cream.

Exercise Like the Beast You Were Born to Be

Similar to the body needing the appropriate fuel to keep it running; it also needs a moderate amount of exercise to maintain its strength, muscle tone, and flexibility. According to Men’s Fitness, a light to moderate fitness plan (with the appropriate diet) four times a week will keep your body lean and in good working condition. A few minor changes to any diet or exercise plan can make a world of difference. What’s important here is you don’t have to become a hardcore gym goer if you want to remain fit and healthy. It’s all about making the appropriate decisions.

Watch Out For Hidden Calories

If you’re on the right path to eating well and getting enough exercise, but still haven’t seen the results you were hoping for, the answer may lie hidden somewhere within your daily diet — juices, coffees, and sodas often have an alarming amount of hidden calories. These delicious treats are jammed packed with sugars, carbs and saturated fats. A Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino for example (my personal favorite) will set you back a whopping 550 calories. Adding an extra 500 or so calories doesn’t seem to be all that much, but with everything else consumed during the day it can add up quite quickly.

Waist Not, Want Not

There is no magical pill or potion to weight loss at any age. Yes, you can lose a ton of weight by dieting —cutting out this food, or that food — but what you’re looking for is long-term results and sustainability. When you really get down to it, and manage your way through all the fluff, a sensible diet and a moderate amount of exercise is the only way to maintain your health over a long period of time. But don’t forget to enjoy life a long the way. It can be rather dull otherwise.

Review: True Glow by Conair

Shedding your dry winter skin in exchange for soft and supple summer skin can be a challenge. I’ve heard of skin brushing before, but never once have I ever thought to give it a try myself. To be honest, I always viewed it as an additional, and rather unnecessary, part of a beauty routine. My skin has always had a dry and uneven texture to it. And up until recently I also believed that my skin was too dry and sensitive to use a skin brush to exfoliate my face. As it turns out, skin brushing has been proven to have many positive health benefits like increasing circulation, eliminating waste and toxins, reducing fat deposits, and even tightening the skin and toning muscles.

True Glow from Conair is an excellent way to rejuvenate yourself for the summer months and buff away your drab winter skin. True Glow has various attachments to help exfoliate and eliminate dead skin, leaving your skin incredibly soft and refreshed. It also uses Sonic technology, which means there is not just a rotation but also a pulsation to lift dirt from the skin and help to cleanse clogged pores. The device also has a high, medium, and low settings, which makes it perfect for people with different skin types. It is rechargeable, waterproof, and relatively compact, which makes it ideal for storage purposes and traveling.

My Experience

After my very first time using True Glow by Conair, I was blown away. I couldn’t believe I had waited all this time to try skin brushing. The first thing I noticed immediately after using it was the difference in my skin’s texture. I suffer from rough, dry, uneven texture and it has been nearly impossible for me to find something that was consistently benefiting my skin. The first time I used it was in the evening as a part of my bedtime skincare routine. I had removed my makeup before using it, and I decided to use the lowest power setting since it was my first time using the device. Afterward, my face felt successfully cleaned and exfoliated without feeling tight or irritated. It removed all the excess dirt and makeup that was left behind by my makeup remover. Honestly, I also feel like it’s the best way to get the most out of your facial cleanser and skin care routine. The benefits of a facial cleanser are enhanced with the help of skin brushing. After about a week of consistent use, I genuinely believe my skin has never looked or felt better. It looks clearer, healthier, and more toned. I am so happy I jumped on the skin brushing bandwagon, and I can’t see myself ever jumping off! If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend giving skin brushing a chance.

Review: SkinHealth King West

Your skin is the largest, the most visible, and the most complex human organ. That’s why it is so incredibly important to take good care of it. Give yourself an extra boost of nutrition — and I’m not talking about clean eating and kale diets. Feed your skin with the proper vitamins and it will thank you!

SkinHealth Clinics (I visited the King St. West location), focus on achieving sustainable and natural results by Feeding, Boosting, and Finishing your skin using their Skin90 treatment plan. It all starts with a consultation regarding your skin goals and concerns, and what needs to be done for your skin to thrive. As it turns out your skin needs active ingredients like vitamins A, C, and E, antioxidants, and peptides. Your feed is the take home product and “daily diet” your skin needs to sustain itself in a healthy way. During your consultation, you will discuss an at-home skin care routine that best suits your needs and concerns. Your boost is the in clinic treatment. This appointment with your Skin Coach and Registered Nurse takes approximately 90 minutes. It’s designed to increase penetration of active ingredients, i.e., Vitamins A, C, and E, stimulate collagen and elastin production. Long story short, one in-clinic boost is equal to 40 days of at home product, so it is the perfect way to accelerate results and achieve healthier skin faster. Finishing treatments address specific concerns around volume loss (fillers), and wrinkles (Botox) if necessary for your skin.

My Experience

I never really thought of my skin as something that needs to be “fed” a healthy diet. But SkinHealth taught me, and showed me, how important vitamins are for your skin. My skin has come a long way over the years. But, like everyone, I have specific skin concerns. My skin is dry, red, and is prone to breakouts and blackheads. Overall, it’s not terrible, but it could definitely improve.

After discussing my concerns with Melissa, my Skin Coach, and registered nurse, she chose a clinic treatment for my needs. My boost treatment plan was called Environ’s DF Vitamin Infusion Treatment. It started with a gentle clay mask exfoliation and deep cleanse. After that, we used something called “sonophoresis,” which uses a probe to produce high-frequency sound to “shake” the skin cells and allow the active ingredients to fall through. It feels like someone is massaging your face and at times you can hear a high pitched sound. For the last step of my boost treatment she used “iontophoresis.” This final step uses energy to help push active ingredients into the skin with a thick white alginate mask. This mask was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I didn’t feel anything really, except a very thick sheet masking cover your entire face including your eyes and mouth (optional), but for the first few seconds, after the mask was clipped to an energy producing machine, you can see a little light show while your eyes are sealed shut. Overall, it was a very different but informative and cool experience.

Final Thoughts

When I left the clinic, my skin felt super soft, clean, and refreshed. When I got home and looked in the mirror, it looked healthier and more glowing than it ever had. I took a selfie in the car and posted it on my Instagram story. A friend of mine texted me asking if I had makeup on, and I said no. She was amazed at the results. So I guess what I’m trying to say is my skin was clearly thirsty for vitamins, and I would absolutely recommend SkinHealth’s treatment if you are having trouble with your skin, or you just want to try giving your skin an extra boost. They offer a variety of different treatments plans to focus on various concerns from aging to acne and everything in between. If you are in a crunch and need to be ready for an event, it is the perfect way to get your skin in the best shape it can be in!
