Must-Have Pieces Every Girl Needs for Fall

Fall is the time of year when the old meets new to create looks that incorporate pieces we’ve loved since Spring with elevated touches and weather appropriateness. While Summer is the time for fresh styles and lighter looks, I have to say that I love Fall fashion as it allows room for more complicated pieces to come together. Our fashion editor, Chris, put together a list of Must-Have Pieces Every Guy Needs For Fall. Now, here is one that will help guide the most stylish ladies this season!

The fitted bomber was a huge hit this past spring and fall. It adds a masculine edge to an outfit and can be extremely versatile. This fall, the bomber is coming back and in a big way (literally). Many fashion icons have been rocking this look four sizes up to add proportional depth to what they are wearing. Layering has always been a fall staple and the oversized bomber leaves ample room for this trend in many ways.

Your robe coat could be made of velvet, flannel, or silk. No matter the fabric, this is a great way to be comfortable this season while still maintaining a statement look. The silhouette that a robe gives allows the a wearer to remain feminine while staying cozy. This looks great over a body suit, a graphic tee, or whatever else you can fit under this flowing piece.

Bundling up doesn’t have to look frumpy. The turtleneck has been a chic and sophisticated staple for the past few colder seasons. The look gets a bit of a facelift this fall as fashion-lovers are wearing additional pieces overtop in order to allow the high-neck to subtly work together with a statement piece. This unification allows for an ultimate high-fashion look. Put your layering skills to work!

The fall season has been known as a time to pack up the lighter shades and bring out the blacks and navies. However, light-wash is staying strong this fall and is transitioning into in-season by being worn with long sleeve bodysuits, graphic tees, button ups, and more. The look of a light washed jean is classic and always brings a vintage feel to an outfit. This is why you can be a bit daring when dressing up in this timeless colour.

Being girly in cold weather can be a bit challenging — you battle whether to look glam or to freeze. The long skirt allows you to do both and is an option that works with many types of styles. Casually, the piece can be great with a simple t-shirt or sweater. If you want to dress it up or give it an edge, your favourite fall jacket will go perfectly with this standout fall staple!

Ones To Watch: Isabel’s 5 Brands To Keep An Eye On

Emerging fashion talent has become endlessly easier to discover since Instagram. Be it through the explore page or just free falling down a rabbit hole of investigative scrolling (erm, “stalking”), discovering new talent in the deepest, darkest corners of the world can take place under the covers in less than half an hour. Gone are the glory days of Iris Apfel in the 1970s, travelling the world in search of talent, she can just click around now! In practicing the latter, here’s what I dug up for you.

This L.A.-based shoe brand began after designers Keren Longkumer and Valerie Quant met studying footwear and found common interest in “unconventional forms, proportions, materials and attention to detail.” Their shoes pair simplicity and creative detailing to produce collections of timeless footwear.

The Sleep Shirt is a Canadian sleepwear company that makes timeless nightwear in high quality fabrics. It all began with a simple nightshirt design based on a 19th century chemise found by Alexandra Suhner Isenberg at a vintage menswear stall in London’s Spitalfield’s market. From there the brand produced unisex sleep shirts in two lengths and has since expanded to wide range of pale-coloured shirts and PJ sets. Also, the combination of the PJ trend in fashion and the classic designs make these pieces perfectly acceptable to wear outside of the bedroom (tried and tested by yours truly).

Rachel Comey is well past up-and-coming–Saks and Opening Ceremony are among her long list of stockists–but still deserves a mention because still not enough people have heard about her brilliance. Her mix of prints and proportion play make each of her pieces entirely unique. She counts Lena Dunham, Tracey Ellis Ross, Michelle Williams, and Maggie Gyllenhaal as fans. So yeah, very cool.

Founded by French It-girl and Jane Birkin reincarnate, Jeanne Damas, Rouje is your one way ticket to Parisian cool. She describes her debut collection as a universe where “sober sophistication meets assertive sensuality.” The model and photographer recruited her coolest collection of photographers/models to make a super cool team. The clothes themselves include 70s mini skirts, simple t-shirts, and elegant wrap dresses and blouses.

Common Muse is a jewelry brand that believes luxury is a state of mind, not a price point. Offering a streamlined collection of minimal pieces, their philosophy is that a luxurious lifestyle is “one that involves conscious choices, reflecting a refined and sophisticated identity.” Their pieces are simple, geometric forms of silver and gold, each delicate and thoughtful.

Isabel’s Fall Must-Haves

It might be odd that, in my twenties, I still feel the urge to do a back-to-school wardrobe refresh, but alas, such is the case. I love having all my looks figured out and ready-to-go for September 1st, just as I did when I was 6 years old. Through the many seasons of back-to-school shopping, I have added some sophistication and subtracted some pretty terrible trends from my wardrobe and, this year, I feel as though my fall must-haves have reached perfection through a blend of 90s classics (see Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy for inspiration), oversized modernity, and a touch of humour.

Try to have a cozy knit turtleneck in as many neutrals–tan, black, cream, grey–as possible and you will be set for the entire FW16 season simply because it is impossible to tire of them.

Yes, I recommend also having a very thin, layering turtleneck if you plan to stay on trend this fall. Try one in a bold colour under a more neutral statement piece to match the Hermès FW16 look.

Double L Jeans, L.L. Bean $39.95 | Photo: L.L. Bean

You can’t go classic 90s without a great pair of straight leg jeans. I recommend this pair from L.L. Bean because I am pretty sure they haven’t stopped making them since the 90s and for that they deserve the top spot.

Nothing says “oversized modernity” (sorry I’m quoting myself) like layering an oversized tunic over wide-leg trousers. This whole look is very Olsen twin and is perfect.

Overlay Wide Pants, Stelen $79 | Photo: Need Supply Co.

These (very, very comfy) wide leg trousers will match with any oversized look. They even pair well with any of the items in the “90s classics” category above.

This is a great item to find vintage, usually in the men’s section of the shop, as buying new might cost you a bit. Make sure you love it and that you can fit sweaters underneath (because your mother was right about that) before you invest.

Glove leather pumps, Martiniano $455 | Photo: Net-a-Porter

To top of your oversized look, try these effortlessly elegant glove shoes–the latest interpretation of the ballet flat that nod to Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. Martiniano makes the perfect pair.

How fabulous are these white and blue shrunken cat eye specs? I know. You want them too.

Isla Embroidered Boot, Loeffler Randall $550| Photo: Need Supply

My initial impulse was to add a classic black leather version of this boot, but then I saw these and they screamed “must-have” so here we are. Simply fantastic!

Honourable mentions (because you should probably already have these): camel coat, classic trench, cream thick-knit hat, black leather hand bag, red socks.

One month one style: Furry Feet

Summer is almost over, so whether you are excited for the first blast of Autumn air or still trying to hold on to these last days of summer, one thing is for sure: the new season means refreshing your wardrobe with new clothes. To make the transition a bit smoother, let me introduce you to hottest trend of the month that can be easily incorporated into your current summer-y wardrobe: furry shoes.

Fur has always been one of the top trends during the colder seasons. But for fall 2016, the fur has been extended into our footwear! After observing all the biggest runway shows, we can definitely say that hairy and furry shoes are more relevant than ever. From high heels to slides, sneakers, boots and loafers, everything will look that much trendier with fur, so don’t hesitate to release your inner wild side and open up your mind for the unexpected new addition to your shoes.

Here are five ways to give your shoes the fur treatment:

1. The Funky Touch: Slides

These rubber base shoes that  usually function as a shower shoes or for pool activities got a fancy update: fur! It all started when Rihanna released a new line of furry slides with Puma. As expected, they sold out the moment they went online and from that point onward the furry slide became a footwear phenomenon.

Slipping them on instantly creates a fashion forward statement. You can basically wear them with any look. Cropped trousers, boyfriend jeans or skinnies are all great options that will give your look a fun boost. But hurry up, the funky slides can’t be worn when the temperatures drop are dropping down.

2. The fancy feet: Sandals

We all know that fur has a fall/winter feel to it, so fur sandals are the perfect shoe for the transition from summer to fall.

Following in the footsteps of Gucci, which gave their heels edgy an interpretation last fall, other designers such as Fendi, Alexander Mcqueeen and Blumarine introduced their vision to the fur mania: two strap sandals covered with fur, tuft of fur in the middle of open toe shoe or ankle strap sandals with cut-out wedge heels and a lot of hairy details.

3. Just a glimpse, Loafers with fur lining

If you are not crazy about all of these hairy shoes , there is another way to channel your fashion forward look: leather shoes with fuzzy soles.

The statement loafers with the fur lining are definitely a must-have for fall footwear, and even though they scream attention, there is something about them that has got us hooked. It comes as no surprise that It-girls and fashion influencers, like Alexa Chung, Leandra Medine or Mary Kate Olsen, have indulged themselves with these Gucci loafers. We adore them simply because they match with any fall outfit, plus they are so comfortable you will never want to take them off.

4. Pompomania, Furry pom pom shoes

Colourful pom-poms elevate any casual look to a pure fun and help any woman embrace her flirty, girly side. This fall, pom-poms have returned in full swing as footwear accessories. Top designers gave their interpretation to the charming pom-pom. Dolce and Gabbana, which have been the pioneers of the trend, introduced their metallic pumps with the fun fur embellishment. To feed up our cheerleader spirit, Fendi featured colourful fluffy heels. Sonia Rykiel’s pom pom version was more sensual and feminine with an oversized pom-pom attached to the front of the shoes.

5. Fur trimming

Experimenting with different materials is one of the biggest trends in footwear this season. Designers are no longer satisfied showing conventional shoes on the runway. Instead, they are willing to invest in unique details like fur accents. BCBG, for example, showcased snakeskin shoes with a fur band on top and chunky fur lined heels. At Christopher Kane, the kicks got a luxury update with fur that cover the feet, ensuring that we will be safe from the chilly breeze. The fur-attached shoes not only will keep your feet warm and cozy, which is obviously an essential addition to your winter wardrobe, but also will add a touch of modern glam to your appearance.
