As a lawyer in training, Tom Caldwell never thought he would eventually become a menswear designer.
In some way, he unconsciously developed his passion for fashion through the evolution of his personal style saying that, “I’ve gone through a lot of phases in my personal style development, from skater kid in high school, to prep, then back to street style, and on to menswear.” His discerning taste and appreciation of quality workmanship and subtle details awakened a very special interest in made-to-measure suiting and shirting and the desire of creating a line that speaks to his particular aesthetic and experiences: “To be honest, growing up I never wanted to be in a ‘suit’, though I slowly realized that tailored clothing is amazing and I had a real passion for it. However, I don’t think anyone out there really got the exact style I was looking for,” Caldwell explains.
After debuting his Spring/Summer 2016 collection at the Toronto Men’s Fashion Week last season, Creative Director Tom Caldwell is especially proud of being one of the finalists competing for the Emerging Menswear Designer Award (EMDA) on August 23rd, “Although Thomas Henry Made is new, the ideas behind it were years in the making, and this collection is the culmination of all that inspiration, properly expressed in a tight, well-presented collection.”
The present and future of Thomas Henry couldn’t be more ambitious. However, behind Tom’s brilliant start in the fashion industry there is no “secret potion.” The components of this success come from the best quality: passion for small details and keeping the customers happy in order to build a long-term relationship with them.
Smart, timeless and approachable are probably the three ways to describe the signature of this brand based in Toronto and New York City. With a strong belief that proper fit is paramount, Thomas Henry’s suits and shirts are custom made in Europe using a pattern personalized to each customer and designed according to their individual tastes, not the trend of the time.
