Ken’s 10 successful years.
By Gawa Kong
Inspired by a commitment to vintage craftsmanship and the stark utilitarianism of industrial design, local label Krane celebrates it’s 10th anniversary this fall. Launched in Toronto by designer Ken Chow after stints with Cloak and Marc Jacobs, Krane originated with his signature waxed cotton and leather mens handbags. Over the brand’s first decade, Chow’s distinctive vision and creative drive have naturally progressed into a fully developed menswear line, featuring bold outerwear, apparel and accessories.
Paying homage to the structure and stark silhouettes of military uniforms, the Krane man is a well equipped to confront the bitter winters of the northern Canadian tundra as he is for escapades in a freezing urban landscape. Classic pieces such as pea coats, trenches and bomber jackets are re-envisioned with leather detailing, gun metal accents and inner linings created from Italian wool military blankets.
It is this fusion of classic design heritage with a sharp, contemporary aesthetic that has captured the imagination of discerning gentlemen and the fashion industry. Krane has been sought after for collaborations with Kenneth Cole, the Fashion Design Council of Canada, and an invitation from Hudson’s Bay Company to create a commemorative version of the iconic Bay blanket coat. Having honed and established the foundation of the brand’s design approach and philosophy over its first decade, Krane continues to march forward into richer and unexpected territory.
