Model Citizen – Peter Lim

Born in Korea and based out of Toronto, Peter Lim has been living in Canada for the last 13 years. Now at 27 years of age and full of inspiration, this aspiring model is off to a great start. Peter recently walked the runway for our Novella pre-launch party, and was chosen to walk for a total of eight different designers during Toronto men’s fashion week.

How did you get into modelling?

I really started thinking about becoming a model exactly about 3 month ago when I met Rani Kim, one of the EMDA designers at TOM. We met through a good mutual friend of ours. Before I met Rani, I thought about being an entrepreneur in the fashion business, where I would like to assist people with choosing proper dresses and styles for certain occasions like social networking or New Year’s parties. However, my education was heavily in biology and chemical science, so I wasn’t sure about becoming a fashion stylist. It made more sense for me to become a model for more exposure to the fashion industry, gain some followers and develop a reputation for my style. But I still didn’t have a solid plan.

After I met Rani, she invited me over to various fashion shows such as Fashion Art Toronto, and Canadian Philippines Fashion Week. Through Rani, I was very fortunate to connect with Som Kong and Benji, where their styles also inspired me to walk for their collections as well as Rani’s.

Since then, I started to look into different venues and ways to get modelling experience. My first catwalk was with Novella fashion magazine for their pre-launch event.

What was your experience like walking in the very first Toronto men’s fashion week?

My experience as a walking model in the very first Toronto Men’s fashion week was quite amazing, as the organization put so much effort and time to make this happen in Toronto. Although my personal experience was amazing, there is definitely room for improvement in communication between the casting team and the models. It is understandable to have miscommunication and delays in the delivery of messages but it was not transparent and effective as there were numerous cases of re-castings and shortcoming notices for castings call. All this in mind, TOM was being hosted for the first time and I truly believe that this issue can be solved with more time and experience in the process of preparation with implementing better communication.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Oh god, I have too many hobbies and interests that I try to do in my spare time. I really enjoy weight training, playing guitar, reading novels (LOTR & Harry Potter are my favourites) and entrepreneurship books, collecting fashion style pictures using Tumblr, and Pinterest, playing sports with friends (both indoor and outdoor), shopping at malls, or Winners, listening to 80s and 90s music (I recently got into acid house and deep house scene), trying out new food/restaurants, walking my dog on the weekend, catching up with friends, studying basic French and Italian  –  that’s pretty much what I try to do during my free time! Of course not all of them in one day.

What are you currently listening to on your iPod?

My IPod is currently broken, so the most recent song I listened to was “When fire starts to burn” by Disclosure.

What words would you use to describe yourself?

I would describe myself as an energetic, optimistic, friendly, adventurous, spontaneous, hard-working, caring and overall fun person.

Look Book – Mélissa Nepton

Just in time for fall, Mélissa Nepton reinvented herself with a couture collection inspired by 80s street fashion, mainly sport and pop culture silhouettes. Tailored in brocade, metallic and neoprene fabrics, Nepton revisits the famed decade with flare and savoir-faire. More than ever, Nepton explores fabric, texture and colours, while creating new forms in design.

Mélissa Nepton’s ready-to-wear fall/winter collection presents a rich mix of warm fabrics and woven textiles that are central to her highly stylized take on comfortable fashion. The designer demonstrates creative tailoring by innovating neck structures to exemplify her study in composition. Nepton also diversifies her collection with slouchy trousers, A-line skirts and fitted dresses that are accentuated with neoprene for an urban chic look.
